Sedgwick County Gambling- An Oxymoron

The voters of Sedgwick County have twice rejected casino-style gambling. For those readers who are not familiar with Kansas, Sedgwick County means the greater Wichita metropolitan area. For Kansans who are not familiar with Wichita, it has around 350,000 people in south central Kansas where I-35 heads due south for Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth. Anyway, twice they had a chance to benefit from the tax revenue casino gambling would generate and turned it down. Now there's a possibility that Indian gambling may come to Wichita. The revenue sharing won't be the same. The State of Kansas opposes the idea, because it would compete with a state-owned casino to be operated by a contractor on the Wichita metro area's south border. I have no idea how the county and city government and private interest groups will react to the idea of an Indian casino on a defunct amusement park tract of 10-plus acres. But, I think I can guess how the religious interests who want to protect the good people of Wichita and environs. They'll oppose it, despite the synergy it would create with the Kansas Coliseum, a closed dog track that could reopen, and a 5,000 seat sports arena under construction. Eventually, Wichita will become a tourist destination, but not for a while.
